Being Human

We are 95% genetically similar to chimpanzees. Many creatures display self-awareness, sentience, emotions, and the ability to suffer. There is evidence that many animals have a grasp of morality. Even fruit flies exhibit free will. In the end, the only thing we can think of that makes us superior to animals is our so-called souls. But a soul cannot be measured or observed. There is no scientific evidence of it. We believe in it because there is nothing else to distinguish us from animals. So maybe we should stop thinking of ourselves as children of God but as children of this planet, not exalted above all else by virtue of a Creator but a part of the great web of life. Maybe we should start thinking of ourselves as animals, not because we must descend into the ways of brutes but because we must treat all living creatures like human beings.
