There was a time when the government, the church, and the mainstream media were the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost of opinion-making. They were gods and demons fighting among themselves for control of our hearts and minds. Then came the Internet, the biggest wrench thrown into the gears of the old patterns of power. Because of the free and swift flow of information and ideas, the power to influence thoughts started bleeding away from the veins of the politicians, the priests, and the media moguls; and flowing towards the common folk. Suddenly, we realized we had the power to talk back to the idiot box, to call out bullshit when we see it, to ridicule naked emperors. The giants who stride above us didn't think much of it until they started noticing their power dwindling: politicians getting exposed, religious doctrines getting questioned, audiences consuming information and entertainment on their own terms. Because of the Internet, we are starting to beat these giants into submission.
The Internet is Promethean fire, stolen from gods and given to mortals. The gods want it back. But it's too late for that.
